What makes Chris Nicolaysen with Springs Law Group a good neighbor?

When it comes to personal injury law firms, most people picture stern-faced attorneys in expensive suits, aggressively chasing cases with dollar signs in their eyes. Chris Nicolaysen, founder and CEO of Springs Law Group in Colorado Springs, is working hard to change that perception. In a recent interview on the Good Neighbor Podcast, Chris shared his unconventional journey to becoming an attorney and how his firm approaches personal injury law with humanity and customer service at its core.

Unlike many attorneys who follow a traditional path straight from college to law school, Chris took a winding road to the legal profession. He started his career in communications, hoping to work in the entertainment industry. However, with two young children to support, the pay simply wasn't enough. He jumped from job to job, even becoming a school teacher in Colorado, before deciding at age 35 to pursue law school. His law school experience was filled with challenges, including a particularly humiliating moment when a professor called him a failure in front of an entire classroom. Rather than letting this define him, Chris used it as motivation to improve his grades and ultimately succeed.

What makes Springs Law Group stand out in the crowded field of personal injury law is their approach to client service. Chris draws on his experience in customer service roles, including waiting tables during his first year as a lawyer, to create an experience focused on communication and genuine care. "We should feel honored that they're actually choosing to call us," Chris explains, contrasting his approach with the stereotype of attorneys who believe clients should feel privileged to hear their "magic words." This customer-centric philosophy permeates the entire organization, which has grown from three attorneys when it opened in February 2017 to a team of over 20 employees today.

Springs Law Group deliberately focuses on community involvement rather than ego-driven marketing. Instead of naming the firm after himself, Chris chose a name that reflects their commitment to the Colorado Springs community. The firm sponsors local organizations like El Paso County Canine Rescue and The Place (a nonprofit supporting homeless youth), and participates in community service projects. This community-centric approach aligns with their mission of being "humans helping other humans" through difficult times following injuries and accidents.

What truly makes Springs Law Group unique is what Chris lovingly calls their "island of misfit toys" approach to building their team. Rather than seeking attorneys and staff who fit the traditional law firm mold, they embrace diversity of experience and personality. Their team includes attorneys who worked their way up from paralegal positions, those with backgrounds in sports education, and even a former women's hockey player. "We want their personalities to shine," Chris explains, creating an environment where team members can be authentic while providing exceptional service to clients who need advocates during challenging times.

Communication is another cornerstone of Springs Law Group's approach. Chris acknowledges a common complaint about attorneys – that they don't communicate enough with clients. His firm counters this by prioritizing regular check-ins and adapting their communication style to match client preferences. This ensures clients always know where their case stands and what to expect next, reducing the anxiety that often accompanies personal injury claims.
